So for the next few weeks I'm offering custom art cards for a really cheap price. You can choose to have the card drawn in pencil, or inked, or colored with copic markers. Here are three photos of a card I recently finished of Peg Bundy from Married with Children. I've posted a photo of the penciled, inked, and colored versions of the card. Free Portrait? Why not?!

If anyone is interested in me illustrating a portrait of themselves or someone you know, then let me know. I will illustrate your mugshot for free and send you a digital copy of the file, but the catch is that you cannot sell it or use it for any monetary purposes. However, you can absolutely use it as a profile photo, print it off and hang it on your wall, or use it as a Halloween mask if you so desire.

Why am I doing this? Because I enjoy illustrating portraits and you can never have enough reference material. I would also use the illustration for advertising purposes, perhaps post the original for sale, and maybe even use your mug for reference material when drawing comics.

So again, if you liked my Takei and other portraits, then shoot me an e-mail and I will draw your mug for free -m2010stewart@gmail.com.

George Takei Portrait: It's OK to be Takei!

I recently drew a portrait of George Takei that I used for my submission to his logo contest: It's OK to be Takei. This inked portrait was scanned and manipulated in Adobe Illustrator to add text and a curved rainbow, which I was rushed to finish. In hindsight the rainbow could be much smoother and I forgot to include two colors. Oh well, I still like the concept and am happy with the portrait.

Aliens Illustration (for sale)

They Mostly Come Out at Night, Mostly (2011)

Illustrated with brush and india ink and grey marker on 9x12 bristol paper, with roughly 1" border around drawing. Price includes shipping within mainland United States and Canada only. Contact me for international rates.

One of my favorite movies of all time is Aliens. It is one of James Cameron's best films and is a rare example of a sequel being on par in quality with its predecessor. I loved the concept of the space marines and the expanded myth of the Alien creatures. It was terrific! So here I took a comic book style to illustrating an Alien and gave it a gorilla-like stance with it knuckle walking and having hunched shoulders. I think this makes it a bit more unique and a bit more of a striking illustration to have hanging on your wall!

Creature of the Black Lagoon Illustration (for sale)

Creature from the Black Lagoon (2011)
Illustrated with brush and india ink on 9x12 bristol paper, with roughly 1" border around drawing. Price includes shipping within mainland United States and Canada only. Contact me for international rates.

I fondly remember watching classic horror movies as a child. I loved them so much I had models of many of the more famous creatures including the lagoon creature. In this illustration, I was inspired of course by the classic movies, but also by the EC comic covers of the 1950's and the artistic style of John Romita sr. This illustration really pops and would look great on anyone's wall!

Pickled Wallpaper

I played around with the site's wallpaper today. What do you think? The wallpaper is modeled after mason jars (from my logo of 'pickled peanuts') with a peanut used to interlock the jars. I altered the color of the site's title so that it pops more too. I'll probably be playing around with this for awhile longer too.

I made two different versions of this wallpaper. The version to the right was not used, but I still like it though the mason jars aren't interlocking because the peanuts are in the center of the jars like they are in the logo. The one on the left is what I've used and has softer lines that lets the text and images in front stand out better.

Zombie Chicken Art Cards

I made a few art cards as a thank you to the guys in the Haddonfields for having me design their album cover. I drew a zombie chicken on each card as this was the focal point of their album cover.

DC Comic Character Sketches

Picked up a pad of marker paper and drew up a couple of sketches based on some comic book characters on the new paper. The first sketch is of Batgirl, and the second is of Wonderwoman & Batman. Both the sketches were colored with Copic and Pro-Markers, the former tended to bleed more than the other on the paper. Blacks and greys were added with Faber Castle pens.

Last Night's Sketch

So as any good fanboy should, I've been following the San Diego Comic Con for the past few days. To me one of the more exciting things talked about at the Con is the upcoming Avengers movie. In the movie a character called Nick Fury is to be portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson. He's already briefly played this role in the Iron Man and Thor movies, and so I thought I'd sketch out an image of Jackson as this character.

Photograph of sketch (paper is actually white).

Posting for Logo & Design Commissions on Kijiji & Craigs List

So I recently posted adds for commissioning logo and graphic designs from me on Kijiji & Craigs List. I've never used Craigs List before and can't say I'm too impressed by it. Unlike Kijiji the site is very bland and you can't upload images. Check out my listings and let me know what you think of them: Kijiji Add & Craigs List add

New Logo Ideas

I've been playing on Adobe Illustrator to design a logo to represent my freelance graphic design work. So far I came up with a pencil that has my name on it, which isn't too imaginative yet demonstrates what I'm about. For whatever reason I have no problem creating original and dynamic logos for other people, but can't seem to do the same for myself.

At any rate, below is one half of the logo I created for myself. This logo will also be posted in the logo page along with the logos and designs I've created for other people.

Anakin and Obi's Last Stand (2011)

Got to watching the original Star Wars: Clone Wars animated show and figured I'd sketch out Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. I drew their faces and costumes based on the style employed in the cartoon series and then added a little more detail to make it a bit more unique. I also brushed in the lines and background, adding a rough /blotchy background that reminds of something Tim Sale would draw.

For the sketch I used Pro-Markers, Copic Markers, & India Ink. 9x12" on bristol board

Obama and Daughters

Spent the morning drawing an American president with his family. The image is of Obama and his two daughters. I kept the lines loose as this was a quick sketch. After I penciled in the shapes I went over it with grey markers and a black felt.

I had previously drawn JFK and his daughter and liked the idea of drawing political figures with their kids as it humanizes them. I find it is easy to depict politicians as despots and whatnot, but rarely and perhaps more difficult to depict them as everyday people. I may continue this theme and work towards larger images, perhaps paintings. Let me know what you think!

Art Cards

I've been slowly building up this site to feature my art. I have experience in a number of different artistic forms and styles, each of which I am highlighting as a separate page that are located below the site's banner /name. One of the new pages I've created is for art cards, or also known as ACEO.

I love creating art cards because they are a quick way to express a complete idea and there is no limit to the ways in which you render your idea. I tend to create art cards with water colors, brush india ink, or copic markers. The cards measure 2.5x3.5", the same size as a trading card. The card itself can be of any kind of paper stock or even canvas. I tend to use bristol or illustration board cards and less commonly water color or textured paper stock.

Recently, I finished creating 40 art cards that depicted NHL goaltenders. Most of these were modern goalies and at least one from each team from the current 2010-11 roster was included. I also drew a few historical goalies, such as Johnny Bower and Gerry Cheevers. The decision for who I drew was decided by how interesting their mask was, and by representing all of the current NHL teams at least once. Ideally I would like to have 100 of these cards made, but these 40 are presented now to show what I can do with art cards as this project depicts water color and marker mediums, along with a few different styles of my drawing capabilities.
